My German Shepherd and German Shepherd Facts

Origins of the German Shepherd

During the 1800’s Europe was attempting to standardize dog breeds. They wanted to breed dogs in an attempt to preserve traits that were essential in the areas of sheep herding and protecting flocks from predators. In Germany, local communities bred dogs for not just the purpose of protecting flocks of sheep and herding them, but also for intelligence, speed, strength, and sense of smell. In 1889 a German man named Max von Stephanitz was attending a dog show where he was shown a dog named  Hektor Linksrhein. Hektor was the product of German selective breeding, and he carried many traits that Max desired in a working dog. Max purchased Hektor and changed his name to Horand. Horand went on to become the first official German Shepherd Dog listed on society’s breed register. It is through Horand that all German Shepherd dogs are descended.
